Pickleball in Espanola, New Mexico

Espanola has a small informal player base but no clearly published municipal pickleball schedule. The city's Richard Lucero Recreation Center does not currently list pickleball among its programs. For dependable public courts and organized activity, players use nearby White Rock and Los Alamos, where the Pajarito Pickleball Club supports open play and instruction.

Reliable Courts Up the Hill

  • Pinon Courts - 10 Sherwood Boulevard in White Rock. Six public pickleball courts have nets on site, along with lights, restrooms, and water. The location is close enough for a regular Espanola player and is one of the Pajarito Pickleball Club's main teaching and social venues.
  • Barranca Mesa Courts - In Los Alamos at Barranca Mesa Park. Six lined courts create room for groups and club clinics, but players need to bring a portable net.
  • North Mesa - Four dedicated public pickleball courts near 900 North Mesa Park Road in Los Alamos. This is the strongest purpose built option in the area.

For city recreation in Espanola, Richard Lucero Recreation Center is at 313 Paseo de Onate and operates Monday through Friday, but it does not have a standing pickleball block on its current published schedule.

A Beginner Friendly Path

Pajarito Pickleball Club runs beginner and intermediate skills clinics at Pinon and Barranca Mesa. Beginners learn warmups, core shots, scoring, rules, and basic strategy, then have a nearby club network for continued play. Selected clinics are open to nonmembers, while annual membership adds access to the club's scheduling system and organized gear sharing.

Players who want one on one help can also use the coaching directory for instructors in northern New Mexico.

Following the Northern New Mexico Calendar

Espanola does not have a recurring public league or tournament series. The closest consistent program belongs to Pajarito Pickleball Club, which organizes open play, clinics, social sessions, and friendly competition in Los Alamos County.

The club calendar is the direct entry point for scheduled games by skill level. Annual membership is $35, and nonmembers can create a free account for eligible clinics and events.

Turning a Short into Court Time

A solo traveler should use the Pajarito club calendar and choose a scheduled White Rock or Los Alamos session. Pinon is the easiest court choice because nets are already on site and the club regularly uses it. Bring a paddle, outdoor balls, court shoes, and plenty of water.

Visitors with a full group can head directly to North Mesa for dedicated courts or Pinon for a lit shared setup. Weather shifts quickly between the Rio Grande valley and the higher mesas, so an early session avoids much of the afternoon wind and summer heat.
